Should We Follow Our Feelings or Our Faith?

Should We Follow Our Feelings or Our Faith?

Should we follow our feelings or our faith? Which one is stronger? Which one do we tend to pay attention to or follow? Or better question, which one SHOULD we follow?

Onto your Saturday inspiration…

“I have discovered that no matter how doubtful I feel,

I can decide to go forward in faith.

My feelings are not me.

I am greater than my feelings, and so are you.

No matter how we feel,

we can still choose to do the right thing.

Going against your feelings

is not always easy

because feelings are frequently very strong,

but standing against them until you enjoy freedom

is much better than continuing

to let them run your life and hold you in bondage.

If you make a decision,

don’t allow yourself to become doubtful

just because someone else is

not doing what you are doing.

What will YOU serve? Faith or feelings?

Pray: ‘Lord, I choose to not live by my feelings today

or let them hold me in bondage.

I put my faith in You

and will serve You with all my heart. Amen.'”

My Reflections

I find this is sometimes easier said than done, depending on just how strong negative feelings are. They can really be crippling sometimes, and that’s when it seems like depression is lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce. Again, the choice thing–choosing to NOT allow those feelings to overcome us and seeking God’s help to move forward in faith.

On the other hand, there is validity to our strong feelings, that internal “knowing” when something is right or wrong, whether we call that our intuition, our “gut feelings,” or the still small voice of the Holy Spirit guiding us. At those times, I think there is legitimately a blend of our feelings and faith.

So What Are YOUR Thoughts?

Do you struggle to overcome strong, negative feelings?

What are your strategies to not be overcome by them?

Do you agree that at times there’s a blend of our feelings and our faith?

  1. I enjoyed this on a Saturday morning. I struggle depression, which means that negative thoughts and feeling are always floating around. However, the good news is that the Holy Ghost can speak to us through our feelings if we will listen for that still, small voice.

Listening is hard, and sometimes when we hear him, we don’t pay attention. But that is what I’m trying to do.

    Thanks for a thoughtful post.

  2. Thank you for this post, it reminded me I am not alone in my struggle to not be controlled by my feelings. In fact I am writing a book about it, mostly just to remind me that feelings are not always true and I have to pause a moment and sort out the truth from the lie. I do belive in following my gut (the Holy Spirit’s leading) there have been times I’m very sorry I didn’t listen, but thankfully a good lesson was learned.
