On Spirituality:

Do You Follow a Religion

Do You Have a Relationship?

Religion or Relationship?  My beloved Dad used to talk about the difference all the time. People would mention being religious or following some specific religion, and ask him about his religion. Dad always said it’s all about a relationship, not a religion – as in having a personal relationship with Father God, not merely fulfilling religious duties as part of  an organized religion or denomination. Another of my Dad’s relevant sayings on living a true Christian life: Walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk!

Here’s this Sunday’s inspiration…

“When the Bible says we must be born again –

it doesn’t say that we must be religious.

The greatest hindrance to hearing from God

is trying to get to Him through works

instead of a personal relationship with Him

by being born again

and fellowshipping with Him regularly.

People can go to church for years

and do religious things all their lives

without ever knowing Jesus

as the Lord of their lives.

As I often say, ‘Sitting in church

won’t make a person a Christian

any more than sitting in a garage

will make him a car.'”

~~Joyce Meyer in “New Day New You”

Bonus Quotes!

By reading the scriptures, I am so renewed

that all nature seems renewed

around me and with me.

The sky seems to be a pure, cooler blue,

the trees a deeper green.

The whole world is charged

with the glory of God

and I feel fire and music under my feet.”

~Thomas Merton

Not all religion

is to be found in the church,

any more than all knowledge

is found in the classroom.

~Author Unknown

Organized Christianity has probably done more

to retard the ideals that were its founders’

than any other agency in the world.”

~Richard Le Gallienne

People who want to share

their religious views with you

almost never want you to share yours with them.”

~Dave Barry, “Things That It Took Me 50 Years to Learn

My Reflections

I was raised to believe in and have a personal relationship with God as my heavenly Father, and have accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. In spite of the persecution and genocide taking place in many parts of the world, I’m not ashamed to say I’m a Christian.

So What Are YOUR Thoughts?

If you care to share, do you follow any particular religion’s teaching?

Likewise, only if you care to share, do you have that personal relationship with God or any higher power?

  1. I follow the Christian Holy bible. I grew up with King James version and can understand it better than some of the newer ones out now. I have mine since I was 4 or 5 years old. I have started to read the Life Recovery Bible. I am also studying the Wicca religion. As something is pulling me towards it to learn.I like to read and study all sorts of religion. I however follow Christian beliefs.

  2. K. Lee,

Thanks for the reminder that WE are not in charge and that we cannot just go through the motions of being a religious person. Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek, to love unconditionally, to accept each other. yet so many so-called religious people have no tolerance for anyone who doesn’t follow their teachings, speak their religious language, or give to them what they expect.
Just as we can’t create a wonderful love with another person with creating a relationship that enriches both, we cannot have a relationship with God if we do not bare our soul, continously recognize our judgements and continually surrender to this power that is greater than any one of us.
