Transition Tuesday – April 28 Devotions on Favor and Grace, Feelings and Faith

Transition Tuesday – April 28 Devotions on Favor and Grace, Feelings and Faith

So…A bit of  a transition on this Tuesday, changing up my schedule a bit. I spent the morning lining up some sewing projects–doing some prep work, cutting out some more pieces to go with some other projects. Now I have several ready to go; next time I sit down, I can “assembly line” sew some similar projects that use the same color thread. Nice little break from the routine!

Onto Tuesday’s devotions. Remember you can read Psalms and Proverbs to accompany each day on my page, Daily Scripture Readings. AND check out my new page, where you can have an opportunity to put compassion into action–whether through praying, sharing the linked causes, and/or donating.

“Lord, what a joy to know that I can draw near to You at any moment, wherever I may be…that I can come boldly to Your throne of grace, assured of Your glad welcome–not because I’m worthy or because I’ve served You, but because You’re a God of grace, a God of unmerited, unlimited favor–not little dribbles of favor reluctantly measured out, but overflowing, superabundant favor.

‘That You should allow Your creature to have fellowship with You is wonderful enough; but that You can desire it, that it gives You satisfaction and joy and pleasure, is almost too much for my understanding.’ [The Quiet Time].”

–Ruth Myers in “31 Days of Praise”

“I have discovered that no matter how doubtful I feel, I can decide to go forward in faith. My feelings are not me. I am greater than my feelings, and so are you. No matter how we feel, we can still choose to do the right thing.

Going against your feelings is not always easy because feelings are frequently very strong, but standing against them until you enjoy freedom is much better than continuing to let them run your life and hold you in bondage. If you make a decision, don’t allow yourself to become doubtful just because someone else is not doing what you are doing.

What will YOU serve? Faith or feelings?

Pray: Lord, I choose to not live by my feelings today or let them hold me in bondage. I put my faith in You and will serve You with all my heart. Amen.”

–Joyce Meyer in “The Confident Woman Devotional”

-1- It is truly an awesome thing to think about that God welcomes us into His presence because He wants to fellowship with us. I also like thinking about the difference between dribbles of favor and overflowing favor–kind of like that tiny 1/8th teaspoon compared to a 4-cup liquid measuring cup! What a contrast!

-2- I find this is sometimes easier said than done, depending on just how strong negative feelings are. They can really be crippling sometimes, and that’s when it seems like depression is lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce. Again, the choice thing–choosing to NOT allow those feelings to overcome us and seeking God’s help to move forward in faith.

So what are YOUR thoughts?

Have you ever thought about the fact that God desires YOUR personal fellowship with Him? and that He wants to pour out His favor on you, like a refreshing hot shower when you’re chilly, or a cool one when you’re overheated?

Do you struggle to overcome strong, negative feelings? What are your strategies to not be overcome by them?

  1. I do struggle with negative feelings and self doubt. I’ve found two things help – first, music, which I can enjoy despite the weather (cloudy days, of which we have a lot of in upstate New York, make these feelings worse) and, second, moving around and staying active. If I’m moving, I can’t stress eat, which is another problem I constantly struggle with.

  2. Hi Karen,

I have enough negativity in my life, I don’t need to be burdened with more. When I feel stress coming on or negative feelings, I’ll usually go for a walk or take a nap.

I have high blood pressure as it is (and you know why), so I don’t relish the idea to have more compounded into my day/week. 🙂

I wish there was more I could do…
