Reflections and Memories, Obedience and Joy – July 7 Devotions

at

This is a day of reflection for me, because my Mom passed away four years ago after a brief battle with lung cancer, and other cancerous cells throughout her body, as a result of not overcoming breast cancer two years earlier.

Final Memories of Mom
Final Memories of Mom

Mom attended my youngest daughter’s wedding on June 4, 2011, and met her first great-grandchild for the first time (my oldest niece’s and hubby’s child – they are linguists in Indonesia and were in the USA for the wedding and to visit family and friends).

Then, on July 1st, Mom learned she had advanced, aggressive lung cancer.  She wanted to enter hospice care at home. She was surrounded by family and close friends during her final days. We all took turns spending time with her and sitting by her bedside overnight. She passed away peacefully around 4:20am on July 7, with one of my nephews by her bedside.

While we grieved her departure, we were thankful Mom’s pain and suffering ended as she left her cancer-wracked body behind and entered the presence of her Lord…and was reunited with my Dad (her Ben) who passed away in 2002. We could just envision him waiting for her with open arms!

Now onto today’s devotions.

-1-

“Obedience to God fills our lives with so much joy that we don’t even know how to talk about it. The Bible  calls it ‘joy unspeakable and full of glory’ (1 Peter 1:8).

Experience the joy of being in God’s awesome presence. Start your day by praising God for your blessings, and worshiping Him with a heart ready to serve Him.”

–Joyce Meyer in “Starting Your Day Right”

-2-

“Acknowledging the Lord in all your ways means submitting all your plans to Him and allowing Him to work them out according to His will and desire for you. He wants you to come to know Him in the power of His resurrection (see Philippians 3:10).

It is a sign of maturity to seek God for who He is and not only for what He can do for you. So as you pause at the end of your day, seek God’s face (His presence) and get to know your wonderful, loving heavenly Father better.

Acknowledge  His power and experience the joy of walking in the paths He chooses for you.”

-1- I have experienced both sides of this devotional. When  I get off to a hurried, distracted start and don’t take the time for prayer and devotions, the day doesn’t go very well. The reverse is true on the days I follow my preferred routine of prayer and devotions. The day may not go perfectly, but usually much better and more productive overall.

-2- I also have experienced submitting or not submitting my plans to God and the result is similar to starting or not starting with prayer! These two devotionals together remind me of a x-stitch piece I made MANY years ago (1991!) that says “If your day is hemmed with prayer, it is less likely to unravel.”

So what are YOUR thoughts?

-1- Do you find starting the day with meditation sets a good foundation for the rest of the day?

-2- Do you practice regularly submitting your plans for the day to God?

I’m so sorry about your mom. I lost mine 7-1/2 years ago and still miss her every day. Some pains just never quite heal. Although I’m grateful her pain is gone.

I very much like to start my day with prayer and Bible time and find that it definitely enhances my day. When I don’t do that, I just feel off-kilter the rest of the day. Unfortunately, those days happen way too often.

And my answer to number 2 is a shameful no. I don’t regularly submit my plans for the day to the Lord. That’s a big fail.

Good devo and thanks for showing me something in my walk that I’m really missing.

I am working my way back around to starting the day with the Word. I did it this morning with my kids. It was nice to have them join in. I think I’ll make that our daily practice.

I can see how that would send each day off with a positive vibe. My parents have always done morning devotions. I tend to devote the end of the day that way.

-1- Do you find starting the day with meditation sets a good foundation for the rest of the day? Yes, I do. It feels like I’m missing something if I don’t.

-2- Do you practice regularly submitting your plans for the day to God? I haven’t, but I should try doing this.

I struggle with morning meditations. I try but I’m just not able to get up and get started like I want to due to health issues. I’m trying to work it into my day at other times though.

I do find that meditation at the beginning of the day, anytime in the middle of the day, and the end of the day makes our lives filled with depth and perspective. ^_^
