Plans and Priorities, Being Kind to Ourselves – July 9 Devotions

As we approach another early summer weekend, are you already making plans? Do you include Friday afternoons or evenings as part of your weekend plans?

My hubby’s work hours tend to change from week to week. He works four 10-hour days from Monday to Thursday, and then he sometimes works 6-8 hours on Fridays, but we don’t usually know until Thursday afternoons if he will work Fridays. So we normally can’t make plans for Fridays heading into the weekend, but Saturdays are open. When he does have Fridays off, we enjoy spontaneous rather than planned 3-day weekends (like last Friday, when we went to local races and fireworks!)

Onto today’s devotions.

“I believe that one of the reasons people lose their peace and fail to have the things they want is because they get their priorities out of line.

There are only so many projects to which people can give their time and attention. Yet even good things can get our priorities all messed up.

So we have to be careful that we don’t just do what everybody else is doing. We need to do what God is leading us individually to do.

When setting our priorities, it’s important to understand that Jesus is the holding power of all that is good in our lives. That is why He should always be our first priority.

Jesus holds everything together…if Jesus is not first in our lives, then we need to rearrange our priorities.”

–Joyce Meyer in “New Day New You”

“How important are people’s opinions of us? Are we thinking for ourselves, or are we always taking everyone else’s opinion?

Satan works though people as well as independently. He attacks our confidence through the things people say or don’t say.

If we know God is for us, then it shouldn’t matter how we feel or what other people think of us.

Pray: Lord, I often find I’m my worst enemy, especially when I allow what others say and do to affect my confidence in You. I need to know in my heart that You truly are on my side. I need Your constant love. Amen.”

–Joyce Meyer in “The Confident Woman Devotional”

“Don’t get down on yourself about everything you didn’t do right yesterday. Today is a new day.

Learn to love your life, right now, right where you are now.

Say, ‘I am grateful to be a child of God, redeemed and made righteous in His eyes. I am going to enjoy myself all day long.”

–Joyce Meyer in “Starting Your Day Right”

My reflections:

-1- Ah yes, priorities! I like the admonition to remember that even GOOD things can interfere with our priorities, because we really can’t do everything.

-2- I’m finding as I get older, I care less about what others think of me. BUT I do tend to be my own worst enemy, instead of being kinder to myself!

-3- This is probably one of my favorite lines in this devotional: “Don’t get down on yourself about everything you didn’t do right yesterday.”  Going along with the second devotional, this is probably one of the things I do to myself frequently.

So what are your thoughts?

-1- Are you good at setting and KEEPING your priorities straight?

-2- Do you find yourself caring too much what others think, or are you your own worst enemy?

-3- Do you tend to criticize yourself when you don’t accomplish everything you think you should?

I struggle with trying to squeeze as much as I can into a day. I think sometimes my family suffers from that. I’ve been working on prioritizing my days a bit better, so we can all feel better at the end of the day. This is a great reminder for me not to get down on myself.

I’m OK (I wouldn’t say “great”) at setting priorities normally, but right now there are so many, a friend had to help me set up a spreadsheet. Believe it or not, having it on paper really helped me. A lot of it is not in my control. Some of it is.

My husband works 10 hour days as well, but Monday to Friday. We really only have the weekends to do errands and things around the house, although we are hoping to find some time this summer to learn how to Kayak.

-1- I am great at setting priorities but then something happens that has a higher priority!

-2- I do care about what others think – probably too much.

    -3- Oh my gosh, yes.

    Thank you for the devotion!

I’m not good at prioritizing, and it takes a lot of effort to even get my blog posted. I get a lot of interruptions and I feel like I’m a bit scattered. I need to prioritize a book I’m writing. I will have to set aside specific hours and just use those hours for it. I need to pray that things don’t go wrong in that time period.
    Thank you.

I agree that one of the reasons people lose their peace and fail to have the things they want is because they get their priorities out of line. I’m pretty good at setting my priorities; not so good at keep them straight. I don’t think I care (too much) about what other people think. I can’t do anything about that. My biggest weakness is definitely criticizing myself when I don’t accomplish everything I think I should.

Ah this is great! I think I have too many priorities. There are so many things I want to do and not enough time in the day to do them all…I need to once again as I do often re-prioritize my life. And yes put Jesus at the begging of it all.

Priorities are always a challenge for me. I have to stay off of facebook in order to get anything meaningful done. It is too easy to get sucked into fun photos, people’s passionate rants, the newsy stuff going on, etc. I agree that we should let God lead our days and that by doing so, we will see more productive and meaningful results.

My husband work many OTs this week. I feel badly for him. He works almost 16 hours a day. When he is off, we spend quality family time and go somewhere and enjoy family time or if not grilling outside by the pool and swim.

I love this post; there are so many things to reflect on. Yes, I tend to criticize myself when I don’t accomplish the things that I should because I know that I can if I just did it right.

Don’t get down on yourself about everything you didn’t do right yesterday. Today is a new day.

I should very well remember this. I tend to get too hard on myself sometimes, when I wasn’t able to do what I should have done.
