Don’t Mutter While You Declutter – January 30 Devotions

by -

Don’t mutter while you declutter. Instead, shout with glee when you are free–of the mess you get rid of and the organization that replaces the clutter! Funny thing happened today. Hubby Dave and I finally attacked a long overdue project in the kitchen. He replaced the old, leaky, drippy, rusty kitchen faucet with a bright, shiny, drip-free faucet AND spray nozzle, which I haven’t had since I moved in almost 13 years ago. I am so thankful he knows how to do all this kind of stuff–saves a lot of money that we don’t have to pay someone else to do the job!

Anyway, since Dave needed to get into the cabinet under the sink to install the new faucet, we had to clean out the amassed clutter. That turned into the task of sorting and throwing out about 2/3 of the mess, some of which has been under there since before I moved in almost 13 years ago! Then disinfecting the inside of the cabinet, and neatly organizing the 1/3 of stuff we kept – actual necessary things, like trash bags, paper towels, cleaning supplies (with current dates), sponges, and vases.

THEN…cleaned out the other “junk/tool” cabinet next to the sink, and again threw out about half the clutter, and reorganized the cabinet with various household DIY items, small tools, and a couple large cooking items (griddle and indoor electric grill).

Even though we ended up doing way more than we had planned, the outcome was very welcome and exhilarating, so HURRAY for de-cluttering and reorganizing!  🙂

So funny thing, one of today’s devotionals addressed cleaning up messes…imagine that!

“Even as spiritual people,

we must deal with ordinary natural things all the time.

Think about how messy your closet, garage, or basement is–

it didn’t get that way overnight,

and it probably  won’t get cleaned up

without  some time and effort.

Does  a messy area of your home aggravate you

every time you see it,

yet you put off cleaning  it up

because you dread it?

If so, it is time for change.

I want you to attack those messes boldly

and have the confidence that you can have

order in your life and home.

You have the power of God in your life.

You are able to clean up anything in your life

and do it with joy!”

–Joyce Meyer in “The Confident Woman Devotional”

My reflections:

I am once again amazed to read a devotional that is so incredibly relevant for something that happened today! I think it’s easy to look at messes in our home (and our lives) and get totally overwhelmed. Yet, if we tackle one mess at a time, one area at a time, it becomes much more manageable. Not only that, it makes you feel freer and lighter…AND often provides motivation to tackle something else!

So what are YOUR thoughts?

What did you do today? Any cleaning or decluttering? Do you have a system to stay on top of organization in your home?

K-Lee, I had a similar experience! A plumbing leak soaked the floor of the cabinet under my kitchen sink. Everything had to come out of that cabinet to allow the bottom of it to dry. I was ASTOUNDED that three times as much volume came out of that cabinet as there was space for! Only a bit went back, and only in clear plastic containers. Thanks for the great topic!

    Hi Karen,
I organized my business files for 2016 with labels and tabs, did the dishes so my great nieces and I could have a tea party with “jello” crumpets. I am always de-cluttering file folders. Need to reduce the files but if I don’t have them, them pieces of writing will be all over the place.LOL.
So glad you decluttered the area under the sink!

I love decluttering and tidying and make a point to do it at least once a week and either a Saturday or Sunday! Doesn’t take long and once done makes you feel so good!

I attended a decluttering class earlier this month. They said that clutter in our lives can cause depression, weight gain and other health problems. I am decluttering now, a little each day. Let’s all boldly go forward and declutter, bloggers!

Decluttering is not on my list of favorite things to do, but I must do this every once in a while. I agree, it makes me feel freer and lighter after.

I admit I have no system whatsoever. I did recently clean out the drawers in my kitchen. I have been using jarred garlic for a while because I couldn’t find my garlic press in the drawer. Hell, now I know why I couldn’t find it – it wasn’t in the drawer (have no idea where it went – but at least I know I wasn’t just overlooking it again and again)

It’s so much better to do this with a smile on your face rather than a temper. Decluttering is never a fun task but it’s a rewarding one!

I just had the same experience when I picked up a bunch of my son’s things from his babysitter, but I didn’t have any space in his closet – which made me clean the closet…. then I couldn’t fit the things I wanted to keep int he basement so I had to reorganize that.

It is a great feeling though to open his closet and be rid of the clutter!!!

I have to replace my sink faucet too. 🙂

I’ve had my kitchen sink leak and flood underneath. Not fun! It’s started to buckle the wood under there 🙁

I spent the weekend decluttering and I’m proud of my efforts. I put half of everything I went through by the curb and all of it is gone today. I’m so glad someone could use my clutter. I plan to keep on going until every inch of my home is clutter free.

I do not work well with clutter at all. I feel much better once I have cleaned up my desk or even my inbox. I feel like I can think more clearly

Funny enough decluttering is what I will be working on this week. I guess I’m a little strange cause I’m looking forward to it.

That’s super good for you guys! I have never been good at de-cluttering. Im a huge pack rat that’s why and always have separation anxiety with things. BUT it’s something that I need to do on a regular basis. I have too much stuff, lol.
