Complaining vs. Praising – October 28 Attitude of Gratitude

Midweek! I lost an entire day yesterday finishing a project and taking care of some other things demanding my time.  While my goal is to blog daily, or at least weekdays, I’m realizing I need to take a break sometimes and prioritize. I want to make sure blogging is something I do because I *WANT* to, not like other things I *HAVE* to do.


Have you ever noticed complaining makes you feel worse instead of better, and even drains your energy? You end up stuck in the negative situation you complain about, instead of moving forward.

My reflections:

I really like the admonition of this one: “Complain and remain OR praise and be raised!” Another expression I’ve heard often is to “Get off the pity pot.” When I’m honest, I know that anything negative really is just not worth hanging onto, especially compared to the changes that happen when I focus on the positive instead.

  1. I was horrified when (some months ago) I discovered the first words out of my mouth many days was a complaint! Now, I try to start the day with some silent praise. We use the expression “pity party” a lot, but it is no party, and no fun. I don’t like to be around people who complain all the time – and I’ve learned from that (I hope).

  2. I would venture to guess that many people are not even aware of the fact that much of their conversation is based on complaining. We humans get caught in patterns we often do automatically, without much forethought. The key is to learn to be able to objectively step back and listen to yourself. I’ve heard people suggest taping yourself in conversations, to see how positive…or negative, in the words you use. Positivity does make you feel more optimistic, and you will still expend the same amount of energy, so you might as well use it being positive. Thanks for the food for thought, Karen!

  3. Since people often come to me with their problems, I have to be careful while discerning a genuine complaint and a chance opportunity to engage in a whingerama which drains me out, Karen.

    My best question is to ask the complainer, ‘what do you think we should do?’ and try to find a solution.

    When it comes to my own grievances, I try to find some silver lining in the dark cloud and use it as a hook to get past the object of complaint to peaceful resolution. Guess I take the saying – there are no problems, only solutions – literally. 🙂

  4. That’s absolutely right! Nothing will happen if you just keep complaining instead of doing something about your problem. That’s what most people do and they aren’t aware that it only drags them further down.

  5. I so agree that complaining does harm to the speaker as well as the one who has to listen. I fall into the latter category. i end up batting the complaints to one side like a badminton player. I like to appreciate and thank God for all I have.

  6. I dealt with this a lot in my last job. It got to be so unhappy there because everyone was constantly being negative. It really does change the way you can work and how happy you are able to feel there. I spent a good deal of time at my office and it’s just miserable to be around people who are constantly negative. I think being happy is a very important CHOICE we need to make everyday. It makes life so much more enjoyable!

  7. I think someone else had a complaint, Dealing with that was too annoying to hear them especially not may be comfort to you, Just move away and keep moving on!

  8. I think we need to differentiate between whining and complaining. I agree we need to whine less and get past the negativity it causes but complaining in proper circumstances, such as taking faulty goods back to a store can be empowering.
